Fitness and health while traveling can be one of the most challenging things. I have a passion for fitness, but I am required do travel at least 50% of the time for work. So I am going to share some of the ways I have learned to fit in a healthy lifestyle even when traveling.
- Planning – It is almost impossible to keep to your fitness plans while traveling without some good planning. When I am booking a hotel, I make sure it either has a gym (which isnt usually great, but enough to get the job done) or my gym has a location near by. I also consider breakfast options. Some hotels, like Hilton Garden Inn, have fresh omelets that are made to order. This gets the morning started out right! Another nutrition plan is to have individual packets of your favorite protein instead of just the large tubs. This way you can pack a few and easily have a healthy shake without paying $5 for one at the gym.
- Eating Out – There is no way of getting around eating out while traveling. The best tip I can give here is avoiding fast food. There are plenty of restaurants that you can order a grilled chicken salad or something else that fits your diet. If you are not sure where, use the yelp app – it will show nearby restaurants and their menus. Avoid at all costs any fast food chain – all that processed food will kill any good diet.
- Exercise – I find this one is actually easier than the nutrition when travelling. It isnt hard to find a gym or a hotel with a gym. In fact, you can even just go for a jog or walk weather permitting. You can even do a workout in your hotel room, I know I have! The biggest challenge with travel and exercise is your discipline. Just remember all the effort you put in to your fitness and nutrition, and get in at least 30 minutes of exercise. You will be glad you did!
I hope these tips help you think ahead when traveling to help you keep your fitness on track.
If you are one vacation and using a couple cheat days, then forget this all – Ha.
