Over the last 15 years I have learned a lot about exercising with weights. I have found that the majority of people fit in one of two categories. One is the person intimidated/overwhelmed by the gym and the other is the ego that is only concerned to showing off how strong they are.
In either case, the challenge is using proper form to get in a quality workout. Whether trying to lose weight or gain strength (or both), weight training is a great way to reach your goals. It takes a little bit of knowledge and time to learn proper form, and weight training along with your nutrition with accelerate the changes you are looking for.
As a general rule of thumb, there are a few things a person just starting with weight training should consider when it comes to form.
- Understand the lift you are attempting and what muscles it is targeting
- Use a weight you can perform the exercise 10 – 15 times, but is difficult your final reps
- Perform the exercise with a full range of motion (squatting down 3 inches is not a squat!)
- Do not rush
These starter tips are just a few things to think about. Check out our additional posts for specific exercises and how to use proper form.
